Getting Started
Instructions for New Users
Fermilab- Obtain or Renew Fermilab Visitor ID number
- You need a Fermilab ID number before obtaining access to any Fermilab computing resources.
- Are you an Off-Site User (also known as 'Remote User')?
- Read the Computing Orientation for New Employees
- Request Computing Username and Primary Accounts
- Username, Email address, Kerberos Principal, CRYPTOCard, IMAP account.
- Do you need to Reactivate Primary Account and/or Kerberos Principal?
- Register your PC or laptop to gain full access to the Fermi domain.
- Get CMS Computing Accounts at Fermilab
- AFS account, FNALU cluster, web page.
- Join Mailing Lists
- USCMS-ALL, USCMS-LPC, LPC-HOWTO, etc.
- Fill out the CERN CMS Registration Form and fax it to the CMS Secretariat: +41.22.767.8940.
- Read the Rules for Use of CERN Computing Facilities
- Get CMS Computing Accounts at CERN
- AFS account for access to UNIX cluster (LXPLUS).
- NICE account for access to email, to update your personal information and to register for saftey training.
- Register your PC or laptop to gain full access to the CERN domain.
- Register with HyperNews
- Some CERN web pages are protected like the ELog. Send email to "helpdesk@cern.ch" and request to be added to the CMS group.
- If you are going to CERN, please review the CERN Users' Office web page.
- Register with the Users' Office in the CERN main building (near the main cafeteria). Before you go to the Users' Office, fill out the CERN Registration Form and Proof of Employment Letter.
- Specify "CERN Hostel" for "Local Address in the Geneva Region" if that is where you normally stay while visiting.
- Use "+1-630-555-1212" format for phone numbers in the U.S.
- Use "DD/MM/YYYY" for the date format.
- Talk to Tami Kramer (FNAL/CMS team deputy) in 40/5-A15 (building 40, fifth euro-floor, room A15) -- she can sign your CERN registration form and provide you with a letter confirming your employment at FNAL (or talk to your own team leader if you are not a Fermilab employee).
- You can provide Teri's office on the form, if you do not have your own (phone extension 74799, +41-22-767-4799 from outside CERN).
- If you previously had a CERN ID or "Attestacion" card, you must bring it with you to the Users' Office.
- Complete CERN Safety Training
- Must be done after receiving a CERN ID card.
- The Users' Office will give you instructions on safety training. Levels 1, 2, and 3 are covered by a video, available at 14:00 and 15:00 in English at room 55/02-005 (near main entrance) -- bring your CERN card to validate/record your training.
- If you will be going down to the CMS cavern (or elsewhere in the LHC tunnel) you must also complete Level 4, which can be done with with an AIS account from http://sir.cern.ch over the web. Generally, all regular CMS members will need to do this (e.g., required for any detector/electronics work and on-site shifts)
- Obtaining CMS Online Cluster Account
- If you will be doing computing work at P5 (other than checking email from your laptop) then you will need a CMS online cluster account. This can be done only once you have an lxplus/afs account. Send your lxplus/afs user name to the online administrators (cms-daq-cluster-admins@cern.ch) to request an account. The central user machine on this cluster is called cmsdaquser0.cern.ch
- Gaining Access to CMS Experimental Site, "Point 5" (P5)
- You will need to request access to P5 if you will be on shift or working there for any reason.
- After completing the safety training, login to http://edh.cern.ch using your "NICE" password
- Select the "Access Request" option
- At a minimum, you should request the access options:
* LHC Installation Access 07H/19H (LHCI-12) (Daytime access to P5)
* LHC Installation Special work hours (LHCI-24) (Overnight access to P5)
* hut 6593 (CMS CR) (Access to the "Green Barrack" temporary CMS Control Room) - The first two options allow your CERN ID card to open the access and exit gates at P5; the third option allows your CERN ID to open the door to the temporary control room.
- Optionally, you may request:
* Tunnel Transit authorization (T). Access to the car tunnel between France and the CERN Meyrin site -- useful for transporting equipment to P5 with the appropriate material move forms.
* CERN vehicle driving license (V). If you wish to borrow a CERN vehicle -- you'll need to scan your Driver's License and attach the image file to the request. - Sign your requests -- you will need your "Authorisation Password" which is not necessarily the same as your "NICE" password. Contact ais.support@cern.ch if you do not have an "Authorisation Password".
- Note that in 2007, there may be additional options needed to access the the permanent CMS control room.
