The fellowships are a stipend of up to $6k for a high school physics teacher to work on CMS projects over the coming summer. In past years USCMS fellows have worked on many aspects of the CMS project both at local universities and at CERN. CERN Relations with Host States Service requests that everyone coming to work at CERN for any period of less than 3 months, and visiting France for any reason, should have an official PROTOCOLE D'ACCUEIL. It is for US citizens among others. The visa documents are prepared at the CMS Secretariat and generally picked up there. More info may be found in CERN Bulletin No 38.

E-JTERM is designed to help CMS physicists to learn, or to learn more, about CMS commissioning and analysis. E-JTERM is an evolutionary step forward from previous JTERMs with more hands-on work. It is open to all collaborators, whether you've attended a previous JTERM or not.

LHC to restart in 2009
The CERN Press Office issued a release this morning announcing that the Large Hadron Collider will restart in 2009. The news comes after this week’s CERN Council Meeting. The current schedule estimates that CERN will reinstall the final magnet by the end of March 2009, with the LHC cold and ready for power tests by the end of June 2009. Town hall meeting at Fermilab with future director general of CERN
Fermilab will host an open town hall meeting with Rolf-Dieter Heuer, the designated director general of CERN, October 28, at 10:45 a.m. in Ramsey Auditorium, followed by a reception in the WH Art Gallery (2nd floor) at noon. The town hall meeting includes a brief talk by Heuer and a Q&A session. Heuer would like to meet with all members of the U.S. particle physics community.

US Tier 3 Workshop
A US Tier 3 Workshop will take place at Fermilab on 23 October. The meeting will start at 9:00 a.m. and last until mid-afternoon. The organizers plan to have presenters discuss storage element options, PhEDex and OSG installation. A round-table discussion about Tier 3 problems and issues will take place in the afternoon. U.S. CMS detector construction project declared formally complete
The decade-long project to help build CERN's LHC accelerator, and the ATLAS and CMS detectors culminated yesterday (June 25) when Dr. Raymond L. Orbach, Department of Energy under secretary for science and director of the Office of Science, announced the formal completion of the U.S. LHC construction project.

CERN releases updated safety report
Today CERN issued an update of their safety report for the LHC as part of an LHC status update. The safety report reaffirms and extends the conclusions of the 2003 report: that the LHC collisions present no danger and there is no reason for concern.

Access changes
Starting in April, access to the CMS detector cavern and other machine areas will change. Experimenters will need to get a new film badge that requires medical certification from your home institution, a new training course and a retina scan. The new training course will start soon, and it will fill up quickly. CMS will try to arrange a special training session during CMS weeks.
