If you supervised a PhD student in experimental particle physics who defended in the year ending June 30, 2008, please consider nominating the thesis for the Mitsuyoshi Tanaka Dissertation Award in Experimental Particle Physics. U.S. CMS detector construction project declared formally complete
The decade-long project to help build CERN's LHC accelerator, and the ATLAS and CMS detectors culminated yesterday (June 25) when Dr. Raymond L. Orbach, Department of Energy under secretary for science and director of the Office of Science, announced the formal completion of the U.S. LHC construction project.

CERN releases updated safety report
Today CERN issued an update of their safety report for the LHC as part of an LHC status update. The safety report reaffirms and extends the conclusions of the 2003 report: that the LHC collisions present no danger and there is no reason for concern.

Access changes
Starting in April, access to the CMS detector cavern and other machine areas will change. Experimenters will need to get a new film badge that requires medical certification from your home institution, a new training course and a retina scan. The new training course will start soon, and it will fill up quickly. CMS will try to arrange a special training session during CMS weeks.
